How to Protect Your Hair When Swimming This Summer
With warmer days approaching, many of us are ready to dive into the pool, whether it’s to cool off, stay fit, or just have some fun! But while a refreshing swim sounds amazing, pool chlorine can be rough on hair, often leaving it dry, brittle, or even with a green tint, especially if your hair is lighter. To help you enjoy the water without worry, here are some easy steps to keep your hair healthy this summer.
How Chlorine Affects Hair
Chlorine is essential for keeping pool water clean, but it’s a strong chemical that can strip your hair of natural oils, leading to a rough texture and increasing the risk of split ends and breakage. For those with color-treated hair, chlorine can cause faster color fading. And if you have blonde or light-colored hair, chlorine combined with trace metals like copper can even leave a greenish tint. Luckily, there are a few ways to avoid these issues.
Simple Tips to Protect Your Hair
1. Pre-Wet Your Hair - Before jumping in, wet your hair with fresh water. This reduces the amount of chlorinated water your hair absorbs, making it less likely to be damaged by chlorine.
2. Use a Leave-In Conditioner - A leave-in conditioner creates a protective layer on your hair, helping to keep chlorine out. Choose a hydrating formula, ideally with UV protection, to guard against both chlorine and sun damage.
3. Add a Layer of Hair Oil - A lightweight oil, such as argan or coconut oil, helps protect your hair from chlorinated water by creating another barrier. These oils are rich in nutrients and keep your hair feeling soft and smooth even after a swim.
4. Rinse Your Hair Right After Swimming - Once you’re out of the pool, rinse your hair thoroughly with fresh water to wash away chlorine before it dries out and damages your hair.
5. Consider a Swim Cap - While it may not be everyone’s go-to, a swim cap is the best way to fully protect your hair. Opt for a snug, comfortable cap that can keep most or all of your hair from being exposed to chlorine.
6. Use a Clarifying Shampoo - To keep your hair fresh all season, wash it once a week with a clarifying shampoo to remove any chlorine buildup. For blondes, a clarifying shampoo can also prevent that unwanted green tint.
With these tips, you’ll be able to enjoy every pool day without compromising the health of your hair. Wondering what clariying shampoo or detox treatment will work best for your hair?
