šŸ’› Stress, Cortisol & Why Your Hair Knows When You’re Overwhelmed

By Jazmyne van Gosliga

We talk a lot about self-care these days — but what does that actually mean?

In a world that rarely slows down, many of us are operating in a near-constant state of stress. Deadlines, parenting, financial pressure, mental load, social expectations - it all adds up. And while we might push through mentally, our bodies are often keeping score.

One of the biggest players in this is cortisol - our primary stress hormone.

Cortisol isn’t ā€œbad.ā€ It’s designed to help us respond to danger and pressure. But when stress becomes chronic, cortisol stays elevated for longer than it should. And that’s when it starts to affect more than just how we feel. It can impact sleep, digestion, skin health, hormone balance — and yes, our hair too.

🌿 How Stress Shows Up in Your Hair & Skin

When we’re under prolonged stress, the body shifts into survival mode. Energy is redirected away from ā€œnon-essentialā€ functions — and unfortunately, hair growth and skin health fall into that category.

You might notice:

• Increased hair shedding

• Slower hair growth

• Dryness or brittleness

• Changes in scalp health

• Dullness in skin

• More breakouts or irritation

Often, clients sit in the chair and ask, ā€œWhy is my hair suddenly doing this?ā€ And sometimes the answer isn’t product-related at all — it’s lifestyle-related. Hair reflects what’s happening internally. That doesn’t mean stress will cause dramatic changes overnight — but over time, chronic tension can influence how your hair feels, grows, and behaves.

šŸ’› Lowering Cortisol Isn’t About Perfection

The conversation around lowering cortisol can feel overwhelming in itself - ice baths, strict routines, expensive supplements. But in reality, nervous system regulation is often much simpler.

It’s consistent sleep. It’s stepping outside in natural light. It’s slow walks. It’s protein and balanced meals. It’s laughter. It’s boundaries. It’s saying no. It’s booking the appointment you’ve been putting off. Small things done consistently make a difference.

✨ Why Your Salon Visit Matters More Than You Think

A hair appointment might seem surface-level, but it’s often one of the few times people fully pause. You sit. You’re looked after. Your phone is down. Someone washes your hair - which, scientifically, can actually activate relaxation responses in the nervous system.

Touch, care, and calm environments all signal safety to the body. And safety lowers stress.

We’ve always believed a salon should feel like a reset - not rushed, not transactional, but grounding.Sometimes clients leave with brighter colour.Sometimes they leave lighter emotionally.

Both matter.

🌸 Taking Care of the Whole You

We’ll always care deeply about the health of your hair - recommending treatments, nourishing products, and tailored advice. But we also know that true hair health is connected to overall wellbeing. You can’t separate the two.

If your body is asking for rest, it deserves to be listened to.If your stress levels are high, that’s not a personal failure - it’s a signal. If your hair is changing, it might be reflecting more than just the season. The goal isn’t to eliminate stress entirely. It’s to create enough moments of calm that your system doesn’t stay in fight-or-flight.

And if sitting in our chair gives you even a small sense of that calm - we’re honoured to be part of it.

Thank you for trusting us with more than just your hair.
