Sustainability is having a moment in the beauty industry. It appears in campaigns, product launches and captions - but for us, it is not about ticking boxes. It is about responsibility.
Taking care of people also means taking care of the planet we all share. Even as a busy salon, we believe we have a role to play. Not perfectly. Not dramatically. But consistently and intentionally.
Across New Zealand, more than 3 million tonnes of waste are sent to landfill every year. Australia sends over 20 million tonnes annually. A significant portion of that is recyclable material that was never properly sorted. Organic waste in landfill produces methane, one of the most powerful greenhouse gases contributing to climate change.

When you zoom out, it can feel overwhelming.
But when industries begin to shift their habits, the impact multiplies.
Here is what that looks like at our salon.
Solar Heated Hot Water
Water heating is one of the largest energy uses in any salon. Every rinse, shampoo and treatment relies on it.
Our hot water is solar heated, meaning we are drawing from renewable energy rather than relying entirely on non-renewable electricity. While New Zealand generates a high percentage of renewable power, fossil fuels are still used during peak demand periods. Reducing that reliance lowers emissions over time.
Clients may not see this change, but every wash basin appointment becomes part of a quieter shift toward renewable energy.
Foil Recycling Done Right
Foil is essential in modern colour work, but it does not need to end up in landfill.
We collect and recycle all used foil through Nelson’s local recycling plant so it can re-enter the resource cycle. Recycling aluminium uses up to 95 percent less energy than producing it from raw materials. In a salon environment where foil is used daily, that energy saving adds up quickly.
It may seem small, but it is meaningful.

Coffee Grounds to Compost
Instead of sending used coffee grounds to landfill, we compost them.
Organic waste in landfill creates methane, but composting returns nutrients to soil and supports a circular system instead of a linear one. Even everyday rituals can become part of a regenerative cycle.
Waste Sorting With Intention

Recycling only works when it is done properly.
Glass, plastic, cardboard and cans are separated and recycled correctly, and our team is trained to ensure it is done right every day. Reducing contamination increases the likelihood that materials are genuinely reprocessed rather than discarded.
Consistency is key.

🌿 Why It Matters
Sustainability for us is not about being perfect.
It is also about longevity. Encouraging long-term hair health instead of
constant overprocessing reduces chemical waste and product excess.
Investing in quality treatments and proper home care means less damage,
fewer corrective services and more intentional choices overall.
Longevity is sustainable. Quality over excess is sustainable. Progress is sustainable.
We are proud of the steps we have taken so far, and we remain committed to finding new ways to reduce our impact while continuing to deliver the care and quality you expect from us. If you ever have questions about what we use or how we recycle,
we are always open to the conversation.
Beautiful hair and thoughtful business can coexist.
